season of thanks

The above is second attempt at improving this photo.  I’m not sure why I’m so intent on posting this… at about this point, I don’t think I even like it!   But, it has been a good photo for trying out the Topaz bundle and Topaz InFocus.  For the above, I cropped it, ran it through deNoise and then InFocus… and then cleaned up the photo a bit in Aperture. And it still looks OOF.

Still in November themes… I took this with this theme in mind… just didn’t get around to posting it!

I tried using the Topaz ReMask to show the whole plate and the placement with leaves… but this proved to be more difficult because of the shadow around the edge of the plate.  So I decided to try a different approach… by cropping it, which I decided I liked better than the whole plate.

I am also experimenting with Topaz InFocus and am finding that program is more difficult to use as well.  I think I ran this photo through deNoise more than twice… but not sure.  I also used Apertures brushes to paint in detail on the leaves… and touch up to get rid of the some of the ceramic plate flaws.  Anyway, if I sound vague, it is because I started this same photo from scratch about 5 times trying different things.

  1. I like your concept for this photo. I too have tried to figure out InFocus. I bought because I read that TopazLabs is pretty good about improving their plug-ins and that in most cases you can upgrade at no cost.

  2. I am looking forward to seeing your next try…I do like the composition and crop….I too am having trouble w/ the infocus…I think I need to read/watch the tutorials because it really doesn’t look like it is making a huge difference to me…if you figure out any secrets please pass them my way!

    • I certainly will… and please do the same for me. People on the forum seem to all be having trouble as well. There is one there that it really only works on low-res photos. And another says to run deNoise first. I have tried to see if it works better on the iPod Touch photos and it doesn’t seem to. I guess tomorrow is the last day of the special price. I don’t know if I’ll buy it or if will finally just go ahead an buy Photoshop Elements 9. (Although Carl says I can have both for Christmas.)

  3. Okay, well I like this idea it’s perfect for the theme. I like the crop it just seems slightly OOF. Easy to do when this close. Nice work!

    • Mike, yes you are right. I tried running it through the new Topaz InFocus and didn’t feel it really fixed anything… and I can’t remember now if this version was run through it. I’ve been reading about deNoise, deJpeg and In Focus between yesterday and today and I think I’m understanding the tools a bit better. O.K., with your comments, I’m going to give it one more try to see if I can make it less OOF. I think its OOF because this camera never does well at higher than 80 ISO… and I forgot to make sure it stayed on 80 even inside.

  4. The theme must have been Old Age as photographic Plates are so PasseLOL
